SUMMARY OF CURRICULUM VITAE
Dr. Zhendi Wang is a senior research scientist and Head of Oil Spill Research of Environment Canada, working in the oil and toxic chemical spill research field. His specialties and research interests include: development of oil spill fingerprinting and tracing technology, environmental forensics of oil spill; oil properties, fate and behaviour of oil and other hazardous organics in the environment; oil burn emission and products study; oil bioremediation; identification and characterization of oil hydrocarbons; and, spill treatment studies; applications of modern analytical techniques (such as GC, GC/MS, HPLC, LC/MS, SFE and SFC, and IC) to oil spill studies and other environmental science and technology;
Dr. Zhendi Wang has continually and extensively lead and involved in various scientific projects, technology transfer, and national and international cooperative researchs with the total funding over 3 million dollars, including a 3-year NSERC Strategic Grants, US $60000 Award for oil biodegradation study from Alaska Government, 3-year PTAC project, 5-year CIDA Grants (CD $750,000), US$90000 Research Fund for oil multicomposition database from the US EPA, US MMS (Mineral Materials Service, Department of Interior) Resaerch Funds, CCME Resaearch Grants, 5-year cooperative research project (2003-2007) of toxicity identification of oil toxic components to larval fish funded by CPI, Fisheries and Ocean Canad, Environment Canada, and US NOAA, and many other research projects in cooperation with multi-government agency, UN, USA, universities, research institutes, industries, and many other countries.
Dr. Wang has demonstrated superior creativity in the conception of significant approaches and innovations with respect to development of the state-of-the-art systematic, tiered and integrated analytical approaches (which involve so-called pattern-recognition plots, identification of new “unique” biomarkers, determination of diagnostic ratios of source-specific marker compounds, and interpreting fingerprinting data by use of various statistical techniques) for source identification and differentiation of unknown spills. He first developed a method of using three methyl-DBT and four methyl-phenanthrene isomers as markers for oil correlation and differentiation. This work was praised as “a significant advance in science of oil correlation”. Using this state-of-the-art technology and methods, sources of many unknown spills have been successfully identified. He developed chromatographic methods to differentiate biogenic, pyrogenic and petrogenic hydrocarbons and first proposed a new concept of “Pyrogenic Index” as a quantitative indicator for identification of pyrogenic PAHs and differentiation of pyrogenic PAHs from petrogenic.
He has authored over 230 academic publications including 66 peer-reviewed articles and 4 invited reviews in the most respected journals in the environmental science and chemistry, and 8 books and book chapters. Dr. Wang “has moved the science of oil chromatography far ahead of his peers” (Fd20). His work has been frequently cited as a recognized authority (the number of times his papers have been cited from 1994 to the end of 1998 is as high as 577 SCI) and he has been widely consulted nationally and internationally in his specialization. The oil characterization technologies he has developed have been widely adopted by academic and industrial laboratories. His research findings and papers, and technologies he developed were frequently requsted by international organizations, government department, research institutes, universities, industry from over 50 countries.
The productivity, excellence and achievements of Dr. Wang have established him as a national and international “leading authority on the topic”. He has won a number of national and international scientific honours and awards such as the appointment of Adjunct Professor of several universities and co-supervize graduate students; co-organizer and chair of international environmental forensic symposium and workshop for the ACS (America Chemistry Society) and International Society of Environmental Forensics; chair and session chairs for a number of international conference and workshops, and serving on a number of international professional scientific committees and associations; invited expert for UNDP, UNEP, UN-IAEA, IOC/UNISCO, US EPA, US MMS, ASTM, US Coast Guard, US Justice Department, US Attorney, California EPA, CCME and Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), China, Korea, Taiwan, and many other contries; Awards for Superio Performance by Environment Canada (1995-2002), Award of Excellence for Overseas Chinese Scientist; Advisor on Environmental Science and Technology (Daqing City). He is Editorial Board Member of “Environmental Forensics”, guest editor for 3 journals of “Environmental Forencics”, “Marine Pollution Bulletin” and “LC-GC”, and reviewer for a number (18) of international primary scientific journals, international conferences and funding agencies. He has been invited by many countries to give numerous lectures and seminars. Because of his recognized expertise and as an eminent scientist, he was selected to author chapters for the books “Encyclopaedia of Environmental Science and Remediation”, “Instrumental Methods in Food Analysis, (Techniques and Instrumentation in Analytical Chemistry - Volume 18)", “Chemistry of Diesel Fuel”, and “Chromatographic Analysis of the Environment (3rd edition)”.
